Choosing Plants for the Home Garden

By | May 15, 2017

There are some things to keep in mind when choosing plants for your home garden. The first thing you want to consider is the theme of your home garden, the size of your garden, the climate you live in, and the time and energy you have to devote to the care of your garden. You also will want to think about the particular needs of the plants as far as soil, shade and sunlight, how the plants will look at different times throughout the year, and how long the plants will last.

Other considerations are deciding what type of plant you want for a particular area of the garden. You might want a climbing plant, a hedge or wall shrub, or bedding plants and bulbs. Desert plants such as cacti and succulents might fit into your garden design or you may want water plants for a pond.

There are annuals, biennials, and herbaceous perennials. Annuals are grown from seed and grow to flower in one year. Biennials are grown from seed in one year and then grow to flower the next. Herbaceous perennials usually live three to four years and then will need to be lifted and divided. They are perfect for flower borders.

Some of the plants that go well in a cottage or English garden would include daisies, foxgloves, hollyhocks, sweet peas, lavender, forget-me-nots, roses, and strawberries. If your garden theme is Japanese or oriental, some plants that could be used would include a small Japanese maple, bamboo, a dwarf pine, grasses, ferns, peonies, and chrysanthemums. Some of the plants that can be used in a Mediterranean garden theme are lavender, Italian cypress, olive or citrus trees, herbs, bougainvillea, fig trees, palms, grasses, sea holly, pelargoniums, yucca, globe thistle, and stonecrop.

Container gardening is a good option for people who live in apartments or who have limited space. Many plants grow well in containers, such as marigolds, begonias, petunias, impatiens, snapdragons, and zinnias. Some of the fruits and vegetables that can be grown in containers include strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, carrots, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, peppers, onions, and leaf lettuce. Herb gardens can also be grown in containers.

There are several ways to purchase your plants. You can purchase them at garden centers, nurseries, or through mail order or online. A good nursery is usually the best way to obtain the healthiest plants and you can also seek advice from the specialists.
